The Himalayas sound intimidating, but some of the most beautiful trails in India are beginner-friendly, affordable and done in under a week. If you can walk 5–6 hours a day, you can trek the Himalayas. Here are five treks we recommend to first-timers.

🥾 Triund (Easy · 2 days · Himachal · Mar–Jun, Sep–Dec) — the classic first trek. A short climb from McLeod Ganj rewards you with a ridge-top view of the entire Dhauladhar range. Camp overnight and watch the peaks turn pink at sunrise.

❄️ Kedarkantha (Easy–Moderate · 4–6 days · Uttarakhand · Dec–Apr) — India's favourite winter trek. Snow-covered pine forests, charming campsites and a 360° summit view of Himalayan peaks.

⛰️ Hampta Pass (Moderate · 4–5 days · Himachal · Jun–Sep) — start in the lush green Kullu valley and cross a 4,270 m pass into the stark moonscape of Lahaul–Spiti. Two different worlds in one trek, often paired with Chandratal lake.

🌸 Valley of Flowers (Easy–Moderate · 4–6 days · Uttarakhand · Jul–Sep) — a UNESCO World Heritage site that erupts into bloom during monsoon, with the sacred Hemkund Sahib lake nearby.

🏔️ Brahmatal (Moderate · 5–6 days · Uttarakhand · Dec–Mar) — a quieter winter alternative with frozen alpine lakes and face-to-face views of Mt. Trishul.

What to pack: layers (thermal base, fleece, padded jacket, windproof shell), broken-in trekking shoes with ankle support, sunscreen, sunglasses, headlamp, water bottle, basic first-aid and a power bank. For winter treks add gloves, woollen cap and thick socks.

Safety basics: ascend gradually and drink plenty of water to avoid altitude sickness, always trek with a registered guide or organised group, buy travel insurance that covers trekking, and download offline maps — network coverage vanishes above the villages.
