A 3-day North Indian wedding itinerary

Every family is different, but most celebrations follow this rhythm. Join all three days or only the main ceremony.

Day 1 – Arrive & Mehendi

Arrive in Delhi, Lucknow or your host city and meet the family. In the afternoon the bride's hands are decorated with henna; guests can get a small mehendi design too. Evening family dinner and a briefing on the next two days.

Day 2 – Haldi & Sangeet

Morning Haldi, when turmeric paste is applied to the couple for good luck — wear yellow clothes you don't mind staining. At night the Sangeet brings choreographed dances, Bollywood songs and a DJ; everyone is pulled onto the dance floor.

Day 3 – Baraat, Jaimala & Pheras

In the evening the groom arrives with the Baraat — a dancing procession with a dhol and a band. After the Jaimala (exchange of garlands) comes dinner, and late at night the couple takes the seven Pheras around the sacred fire. The Vidaai, the emotional farewell of the bride, often happens at dawn.

🎁 Gifts & etiquette

Cash in an envelope (shagun) is the most common gift — families traditionally add ₹1 to make an odd amount such as ₹1,101 or ₹2,101, which is considered lucky. A small gift from your home country is always appreciated.

  • Greet elders first with a namaste — a warm smile goes a long way.
  • Wear bright colours; avoid all-white or all-black outfits and leave red to the bride.
  • Carry a scarf to cover your head in a Gurudwara or temple.
  • Ask before photographing sacred rituals like the pheras or Anand Karaj.

Fact check

Key facts & sources

The saptapadi — seven steps taken by the bride and groom together before the sacred fire — is the legal heart of a Hindu wedding. Under Section 7 of India’s Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, a marriage solemnised with this rite becomes complete and binding when the seventh step is taken. Guests on a NamasteTrip wedding tour watch this moment with a guide who explains each ritual.

A North Indian Hindu wedding usually runs for 1–3 days and is most common from November to February, with a second season from April to June. The main events are Haldi, Mehendi, Sangeet, the Baraat procession, the pheras around the sacred fire and Vidaai. NamasteTrip places travellers with families in Delhi NCR, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Most foreign travellers need a visa to visit India. The Government of India’s official e-Visa portal offers e-Tourist visas valid for 30 days, 1 year or 5 years, and applications must be submitted at least 4 days before arrival. NamasteTrip does not issue visas, so apply only on the official website, indianvisaonline.gov.in.
